One of the hardest things for a new mother is to hear the sound of her newborn cry. And there is something about those first few cries that make a mother strong from the start. I remember having to take my first daughter to the phlebotomy department in the hospital.
She couldn’t go home without a heel prick and she would have to return for another in a few days. While someone might have explained what the purpose of that heel prick was, nothing registered about that event except that it made my little lady cry.
Not just cry like she when she was first exposed to the light of the delivery room or when she wanted to eat. This cry was different, this cry from a simple heel prick made her cry a new cry. It was her first hurt cry, the one that broke my heart. I knew even then that she learned what would continue to be her cry of pain even now 4 years later, at only 3 days old.
Had I known then what I know now I would’ve asked more questions of the phlebotomist to find out exactly what they were testing for and why. The medical field has always intrigued me and might even have been an interest if I didn’t have such a negative reaction to blood. Thankfully there are people without such issues that study phlebotomy every day.
